Facebook - SaaS for the MaaSses

So I was just looking at some recent stats on Facebook and it made me think about facebook’s business model and how they have really become the Salesforce for the masses.

When I was first promoted to an Account Executive position at Advertising.com in 2004 I had my first experience using a CRM system called Siebel.  For those who haven’t used one Siebel and Salesforce are essentially pieces of software where you can log your activity, sales, contracts, phone numbers of clients, and records of meetings.  Essentially, though imposed by managment, we were updating a stream of daily activity.  I make a couple cold calls, I log them in Siebel.  I have a phone meeting, I log it in siebel.  I have an upcoming meeting with a new client that I took over from another seller, I look in Siebel and see what the previous seller’s conversations were.  My boss wants to know how my numbers are going to shape up, he can see the calls that I made, the conversations I had and can come up with a numbers formula to forcast sales.

So all of this, we were really forced to do but once we started doing it, it became a habit and a useful habit because I could track my performance, brag about my wins and have all my contacts in one place.

This sounds very similar to what Facebook has become.  Essentially people are tracking their social lives and keeping record of their lives.  Some use it to brag about their accomplishments and show off their number of friends or become fans of different things.  Others use it less to brag, but more as a rolodex and a record of conversations and interactions with one another.

And this has surely become a habit.  On average 50% of facebook’s 400 million users log in every single day.  I was personally blown away by that number….talk about forming a habit….
